TRIP INTO LONGVIEW AND KILGORE

Today the weather was clear and started off cool as it reached -2C early this morning. The temperature did reach 15C, so we jumped on the Wing and headed into Longview. We took a drive around the City which is about 7 miles to the north of the campground and stopped in at the Wal-Mart to stock up on our supplies.

Coming home we saw this aircraft taking off and landing several times from the nearby airport. The pilot must be practicing and putting in some air time.

After lunch we drove over to a smaller town called Kilgore about 8 miles to the south west. This town back in the 1930’s was a booming oil town and today the old section, built back then is looking pretty run down and a lot of the stores are closed. A section of the town is known as the World’s Richest Acre.

The newer section is much busier. We are going back tomorrow to go through the East Texas Oil Museum located there to find out more about the town and area.

The derricks are now decorated by the town with lights.

More to come tomorrow...
