VISITING LAKE HAVASU CITY

It was cloudy today but the temperature reached a comfortable 25C.

We headed for Havasu right after lunch which is about 45 miles to the south east of our campground in Arizona. We wanted to see the famous bridge that came all the way from London which was known in history to display the heads of traitors. Luckily the heads have long since been removed.

This bridge was bought in 1968 by an entrepreneur and founder of Lake Havasu City, Robert McCulloch, for $2,460.00. The bridge blocks where dismantled, then numbered and shipped over to Long Beach California and trucked to Arizona. The reconstructed bridge was rededicated in 1971 with the total cost being $5.1 million.The bridge has become Arizona's second biggest tourist attraction after the Grand Canyon.

We spent a nice afternoon looking around the area and watching the boats, fisherman and people. We did stop to sample the ice cream as well. 

  

It was another nice day in the neighbourhood.

VISITING THE WILD BURROS

Another great day with a high of 26C.

Our journey today took us back into Arizona where we lost an hour as we past the time zone. It was a 45 minute ride to the north-east with some of the journey on the famous Route 66 which took us to the town of Oatman. This old mining town is now a tourist trap with a western shoot out and the usual shops selling t-shirts and trinkets with the main attraction being the wild donkeys roaming the town and even entering the stores at times. These animals are descendants of the pack animals turned loose by early prospectors. These animals are now protected by the U.S. Department of the Interior and can be fed by purchasing small bags of burro chow. As soon as they see or hear the rustling of the bag they zero in on you and before you know it - you are swarmed. In a couple of cases they became aggressive and started kicking at each other and came close to kicking a person.

We continued along Route 66 to an area near Kingman and then turned around. This road was a great motorcycle road with twists, switch backs and hills. In some places the road is lacking some repairs but overall it was a good ride.

I though this might be a good place to find a pet rock for myself.

On the way home we regained our hour back and all was good.

 Another journey tomorrow - whoopee!

HEADING NORTH TODAY

We were not in a big rush to leave Oasis today as we knew it was about a 4 hour drive to Desert View RV Resort in Needles California. So before leaving we decided to pick some more oranges to take with us as it is great to have fresh orange juice in the morning.

It was a surprise to see the sky covered with clouds in the morning but it did end up clearing and the daytime high was 28C. It was an enjoyable temperature to drive and enjoy the sites.

Before moving on and talking about our new location, Cathy and I have done some thinking about the vineyards we saw and now think they may be vines to produce raisins. We noticed at the Fair, signs saying area grown raisins. Makes sense since we never did see any wineries.

Mojave Desert

 On our way here we drove through a section of the Mojave Desert - looked just like any of the other ones we have been through. The resort is situated right on Route 66 and contains 46 campsites. The sign when we entered said it was full so we were hoping they still had our reservation. They did and all is well.

WE WENT TO THE STREET FAIR

Today was hot with a high of 30C and we were in it all day!

We left for Palm Desert, a community to the east of Palm Springs to see the College of the Desert Street Fair which is held on the campus. This every weekend event is organised by College of the Desert Alumni Association and in total has provided over $8 million in grants, gifts, and scholarships to the College of the Desert through the funds raised by the Fair. There is the usual display of fair wares along with a number of vendors selling the miracle age reduction products, energy enhancer products and items that will reduce arthritis and joint pain. As you would imagine there is a large presence of retirees at this event.

We saw these two service dogs out in the heat. Good thing they have their booties on to protect them from the hot asphalt.

We spent about three hours there then stopped on the way home to get a few groceries. We had our happy hour and then packed a few things away as we are back on the road tomorrow - heading north.
